In support to the declaration of global decarbonisation, the Hong Kong Government has announced the Hong Kong Climate Action Plan 2050, striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, and proposing four major decarbonisation strategies and measures: “Net Zero Electricity Generation”, “Energy Saving and Green Building”, “Green Transport” and “Waste Reduction”, to lead Hong Kong towards carbon neutrality. Waste currently accounts for about 7% of Hong Kong’s carbon emissions, most of which comes from greenhouse gases generated by the decomposition of waste from landfills. Therefore, the implementation of waste reduction and recycling measures is an integral part of carbon reduction at source.
The Association is supportive of the event and signed a charter in 2023 to contribute to carbon neutrality and waste reduction.
