Project Title:

Development of an e-guidebook for good practices for the Hong Kong hotel industry to enhance its business sustainability and competitiveness

Background of project:

Hong Kong, as an international tourism and business centre, is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities for the hotel industry in terms of sustainable development. Hong Kong’s hotel industry is not only an important pillar of the economy, but also one of the main sources of environmental impact. Against this, consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious, and many of them consider the hotel’s sustainability measures when choosing accommodation. In addition, the HKSAR Government is also promoting sustainable development policies and encouraging the industry to adopt measures to meet the long-term sustainable development goals.

To meet the needs of the industry and the community, the Hong Kong Hotels Association has been granted by the Trade and Industrial Organisation Support Fund of the Trade and Industry Department to develop an e-guidebook for good practices for the Hong Kong hotel industry to enhance its business sustainability and competitiveness, so as to help the industry enhance the brand image and contribute to the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

Expected benefits brought by the project:

To increase the understanding and acceptance of Hong Kong hotel industry, especially among local or independent hotels, and to enhance the awareness of sustainability via:

(i) a kick-off seminar to introduce the project, the common disputes in the hotel industry, and to provide the latest information on developing sustainable practices for the industry;

(ii)    an e-guidebook to set out the sustainable practices that cover all hotel departments and sections; it takes the form of a ready-to-use and practical handbook providing guidance for less experienced hoteliers;

(iii)  e-trainings to illustrate the sustainable practices covered in the e-guidebook;

(iv)  dissemination of project results including project introduction and e-guidebook.
